7 Ways to Deal With Mental Health Crises During the Pandemic

A Checklist To Support You While Working From Home

As the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly sweeps the world, it has had major effects on our lives. It has changed the regular lives of people around the world.

Hence, facing challenges these days might be really overwhelming, stressful, and cause various mental breakdowns — including strong emotions in children, teenagers, and adults.

Adjusting to change can also be challenging, but change is very much part of our lives as human beings. Since the start of these outbreaks, we have had to adjust to new ways of living and working.

Working from home is a change that arose prominently from the pandemic. As you may know, working from home allows employees to do their jobs from home.

Working from home might also affect people differently.

Some people might enjoy it, but others won’t. It’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Mental health matters for those who are not very fond of work from home as well.

As a psychologist and a counselor, here is a list of challenges that I have compiled:

I know that it is normal to feel stress, anxiety, boredom, and uncertainty during these difficult times. The better you recognize your mental health condition, the easier it is to overcome and succeed.

Working from home for long periods can start to affect your mental health. It is vital to look after your mental health while maintaining your physical health during this time of corona pandemic.

As I say: how you feel matters. Taking care of yourself matters — you don’t have to struggle in silence.

Set and maintain a routine with a regular start time, finish time, and a structure for your day as you are going into the office.

This will help you to set a boundary between your personal and work life. Otherwise, the lines between your personal and work time might get blurred without any steady schedules and a routine for your daily tasks.

Always try to minimize the possibility of work intruding into your family time.

Working from home always doesn’t mean that we have to be available all the time. If your mental health is suffering, it’s useless to just be “present’’ in the working context.

Taking small breaks might help you to manage your stress, boredom, and help maintain your performance throughout the day. It will also reduce the need for a long recovery at the end of the day.

This pandemic is not your fault. You don’t have to let anxiety and stress ruin productivity. Instead, focus on the bright side of working from home.

It can bring you a sense of calmness and it might ease your stress and anxiety for a while. To save money, wear cozy clothes, and spend more time with loved ones.

Mental health is vital to overall personal wellness. By engaging in activities that bring you a sense of happiness and calmness, you can improve and maintain your mental health.

For example, you can do activities that you enjoy, such as managing stress through relaxation, meditation, and exercising.

Technology is a wonderful thing. It makes our lives easier and more convenient while working from home. However, continuous use of digital platforms can make negative impacts on your physical and mental health.

Many people who have spent hours in front of their computer might be a victim of computer vision syndrome. Some of the symptoms of computer vision syndrome are:

As mentioned earlier, you can engage in a digital detox. It requires you to refrain from using devices like smartphones, televisions, computers, tablets, and social media sites for short periods of time.

In due time, your mental health and physical health might improve.

Social isolation is one of the greatest psychological risks of working from home. It’s normal to feel anxious, isolated, fearful, and lonely during this arduous time of your life.

By reaching out to your family, colleagues, and friends each and every day, you will manage and improve your mental and physical health. If you can, try to make use of virtual discussion forums to converse with others.

Take some time to think and acknowledge the fact that being able to work from home is a luxury that many workers don’t have during this difficult time.

Use this time to reflect on the positive outcomes that you have experienced and map out the strategies and skills that you have developed during this period.

The ongoing pandemic has been particularly stressful. Thus, it is quite hard to predict how things will develop, and our circumstances are rapidly changing all the time. The work-life balance of many people has also been fluctuating a lot lately too.

Understanding and identifying the factors that affect your mental health and practicing these tips while working from home is really important as self-care. These include sticking to a routine, setting up break reminders, training your mind to think positively, engaging in mental health activities, trying out digital detoxes, reaching out to others, and embracing positivity.

Your mental health matters. Start each day with a positive thought and learn to enjoy every minute of your life. You are amazing and don’t forget about it.

As I always say: I believe in you!
