What am I reading?

From time to time someone asks me what to read and who to follow in some of the areas of my entrepreneurial life. I decided to write down the authors and resources I find best in each category…

Final Thoughts on AR

There were two spots I chose to lay my AR overlays for this project. I chose a fire extinguisher sign on the 2nd floor near some of the side classrooms. I initially chose that spot primarily because it was even a spot, I could overlay something. It was in a brightly literal with distinguishable features, so the app allowed me to use it as a base for my overlay. But once I noticed that it was a fire extinguisher overlay, I knew I could have some fun with it.

It’s a fire extinguisher, right? What is it meant to put out? Exactly. So, when choosing an overlay for this specific spot I had to put something related to fire, there comedic irony was too tempting not to try and hit. As I scrolled through the various fire related gifs, I wasn’t impressed by any of them, but then I found the one that called out to me. I picked an explosion gif and labeled it “My mixtape”. Not only for the double irony of an explosion that is associated with excitement, being linked to a fire extinguisher, a not very exciting object. In addition to this bad joke, I added another bad joke of referring to the post as my “mixtape, alluding to the classic internet joke of “My mixtape is fire” or in this case “explosive”

The process for choosing my next overlay was much simpler, because I knew what image I was going to use beforehand was going to be my baby picture. Why my baby picture? Because its adorable and absolutely hilarious to look at 365 days a year. It all came down to finding a proper space to put it. Since I was on the 2nd floor for the first design, I thought I would go downstairs for the final picture. I settled on picking a very definable location that couldn’t be missed, so I chose the window to the computer lab with a certain sign in the window. Easy to find, and very distinct.

I’m super excited about the future of AR technology. What it offers is a glimpse into digital realities in ways that is a lot more approachable and practical for a lot of people. Virtual Reality is also on the rise, but with its high price, and product cost, along with often unwieldy helmets that cause motion sickness, VR is a long ways away form being widely accepted. But with AR and the applications associated with them on cellphones, its barrier of entry is so much smaller. The more widely adopted new technology is, the faster it can innovate and become something super useful for our everyday lives.

I think in a multimodal space AR could be really cool. Maybe in the future as people read books on a digital screen, little overlays could be seen f the action of the event if the right product Is used. Or with keeping the history of a place, in museums, apps like HP reveal could be used to help look into the past of how a building or area looked decades prior.
