Why Are You Still Sending Your Kids to School?

My son and I spent four hours last Friday, a “school day,” riding our bikes on a path winding along the river. Our turnaround point was at the bottom of a small waterfall. During our time there, I…

10 Quick Ways to Find Peace Every Day

Having peace of mind is as important as keeping your body healthy and your spirit happy. When you have peace of mind, you might feel at ease with yourself, aligned with your experiences, and prepared to overcome any obstacles that come your way. But when you’re not at peace, you may start to become stressed or anxious, and that could manifest into trouble concentrating, fatigue or low energy, and anger or irritability.

While we can’t always escape life’s challenges, we can choose how we respond to them and welcoming peace is one way to remain calm in the face of worry and overwhelm. Here’s how you can calm your mind, body, and spirit and find peace every day.

Music is energy. That’s why people rage at Travis Scott concerts or dance sensually to Aventura songs. If you’re looking for a peaceful vibe, try listening to relaxing music that puts you in a calm headspace. I made a playlist on Apple Music called, “Daydream,” filled with calm R&B songs by Alina Baraz, Kiana Lede, Frank Ocean, and more. You should make something similar for yourself and listen to it on your next drive home, the next time you clean, or while you’re taking a stroll through the park.

Ever notice that when you’re playing with babies or small animals, you get all mushy and start making goo-goo sounds? This cutesy energy is good for you because it softens you up and allows you to feel warmth and love. Spend some time with a baby niece or nephew, or play with someone else’s pet or your own for a little while. Their coos and wagging tails will pull you into the present moment and into some necessary playtime.

One of the best ways to find peace is through positivity. You should keep yourself around funny or positive people who make you laugh and smile. But if you’d prefer to take a more introverted route, you can watch a funny show or movie instead. Abbott Elementary is a hilarious mockumentary about teachers on ABC. There’s also Schitt’s Creek on Netflix which is about a formerly filthy-rich family living in a rundown motel after losing all their money.

Affirmations are positive statements that can help you challenge and overcome intrusive thoughts. When you repeat them often and believe in them, you can start seeing some positive changes in your mood. Try identifying things you love about yourself or things you want for yourself in life using “I love,” “I am,” or “I will” statements. The more you repeat them, the more your decisions and experiences will align with them.

Life is hard, we all know that, but one of the beauties about life is we can consume art through story. Escape your life for a little while by cozying up with a good book. Even if you don’t like reading, if you like romantic films, you would also like a romance novel. And if buying a book is too much of a commitment for you, you can start with borrowing a book from the library — it’s free!

Boundaries are a healthy way to preserve your energy so you can show up as your full self. You can (and should!) create boundaries with family, friends, and even your life partner. For example, I prefer to schedule phone calls with my loved ones to catch up because I don’t like to stop what I’m doing randomly throughout the day to have conversations. This is something I know about myself so I honor it with a boundary, and ultimately, the conversation is still being had in a way that conveniences both parties.

It’s good to have expectations so that you get what you want out of an experience or interaction. But sometimes those expectations can be limiting, especially when you think things “should” or “must” be a certain way. You can combat this by connecting with the “why” and leaving some flexibility in the “what.” For example, if you’re a teacher and your intention is to get the students to sit silently for 20 minutes, the why would be so that they can decompress but the what could look like students reading a book on the carpet, reading a book at their desk, or meditating on a bean bag.
