RED vs BLUE

Rational thinking seems to be hard to come by in modern day America. This is mainly because as humans we are inherently emotional creatures. Emotion is a phenomenal thing, as it allows us to form…

ARCHITECTURE MONSTERS

The architect I chose was john hejduk, and the technique that I choose is ‘a catalog of architecture monster’. this idea is from the book ‘Victim’. For him, architecture is no longer a simple solution to the use of functionality, or something aesthetically pleasing, but has more hidden personal content. Also, he is good at using different graphics and structures to design buildings. His architecture is usually closely related to human activities. The project that I chose to research is ‘Berlin Masque’, for the 1984 Prinz-Albert-Palais competition in Berlin for the construction of a memorial park, John used ‘Victim’ for his topic.

One of the centrally repeated themes of Hejduk’s project research was the development of the “mask” concept: an architecture that embodies a role, expressed more through relationships with other elements than through relationships with specific identities, and represents humans and the symbols they should embody. In his works, he emphasized the passage of time. He focused on combining previous buildings with modern architecture. The so-called ‘monster’ also shows a difference from previous architectural styles. I know that his works often bear the grief of that era, but I think that the point he wants to express is to connect architecture, city, and human activities. Considering the use of architecture, I think that giving each element its meaning and then designing a building that is different from ordinary people’s views is what he wants to express.

I used to combine some characteristic structures together to create a new architecture see figure2, but after my research, I found that it’s not match to John’s idea, so I changed my plan.

In my final work, I have deformed several buildings in the UTS where we are constantly active. Without changing the general structure, I have added a number of different elements to change the role and meaning of architectural expressions. I have changed the library, the Blue Building, the UTS Tower and the Harris St Insearch Building, and I build a new campus and connected these architectures using metal channel.

The first building is the library, and due to my research, I found that John Hejduk will name every architecture he created. So, I named the building ’Book Mart’. I changed the windows of the building into the shape of a book and added a ladder to the roof as a watchtower, because I think books are a ladder of human progress. I also added a book tower to show that if you want to gain more knowledge, you will have to work harder to get to the higher floors.

The second building is the Blue Building, and I named it ‘Libra Building’, The reason why I took this name is because I added a roof to the building. It can be used as a ceiling for the terrace. Its shape is similar to that of the libra. The libra symbolizes fairness, which reflects every student in the school. All are equal.

The third building is the main tower, and I named it ‘Stern Building’, Stern means seriousness and rigorousness. I have diversified the overall shape of this building, but the details of the shape are all square rules. Therefore, we must also be careful in the pluralistic situation.

The fourth building is named ’mask of knowledge’, I changed its appearance to the appearance of a city wall. This shape can give students a sense of security.

I used a lot of elements to reflect the role of the architecture to perform, and also reflected John Hejduk’s point of view.
