The Beauty of European Street Art

For my final project I chose to portray the beauty of street art in Europe on Instagram. I did quite a bit of research with several different countries who had the best street art and luckily I came a country who I am very familiar with, Portugal. I did extensive searching around the internet to find what I believe to be beautiful pieces of art.

There were many popular artists who not only did art in Portugal but also in other countries. I made sure to give them the credit they deserved in my posts with hash tagging their names.

The main purpose of my blog is I want to state different examples on why street art isn’t a crime and why its beautiful.

Thesis:

Street art is a diverse and varied art movement.

Many people still see street art as a crime and don’t appreciate what goes behind it. When an individual is doing their street art the building is their canvas and there is no room or time for mistake.

Street art in Lisbon

1 . Originated:

Street art has been around since the cavemen! There was writing in the caves and no on can explain why it is there or why it was done. Then much later it became more popular in the 1970s and evolved from the freestyle graffiti seen in the New York City’s subways and streets.

2. Who did it & Why:

Rebellious youth use spray paint and markers to “tag” their names/paint pictures on walls and subway cars around numerous cities all over the world. There are artists who create the art for personal enjoyment and then there are artists who do the art for political statements. There are many artists choose to remain anonymous for personal and legal reasons.

3. Freedom:

Art is an expression. Street artists have the chance to express their feelings on an open canvas such as buildings or subway trains. It’s also a hobby that they are good at. Street arts shows no gang affiliation, its just an artist expressing how they feel at that particular moment.

4. Life to Building and Creativity

As I posted on my Instagram there were many run down buildings. Canvas’s were painted those buildings and it gave them life and color. Bright colors bring people happiness and with seeing bright colors on a run down building it gives that building life and happiness.

5. Gallery vs. Street

Seeing art in a gallery is different from what you see on the street. On the street it is there for anyone to see free of charge. While in a gallery most of the time you have to pay. Artists who paint on the street used that particular building for free and there are some canvas where you have to pay and that canvas can get damaged more easily.

I hope with my pictures I posted on Instagram you are able to see the beauty in street art and have a different outlook on it as well. Street artists do this for their own person enjoyment, they feel pleasure when walking by a building thinking “wow, I did that its beautiful!”
