Leader vs Manager

A famous adage proclaims, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a LEADER.” Leadership and management go hand-in-hand and are mostly linked and complementary but not the same thing. Managers adopt a process, strive for stability and control and institutively try to solve problems. Leaders on the other side, go in-depth to understand issues and endure chaos and lack of structures.

When people are asked to define a leader, people define them using words like intelligence, vision, determination, and creativity. Such skills are definitely necessary but do not fully define a leader. Recently, people have started defining leaders using Emotional Intelligence (EI). Emotional intelligence comprises of self-awareness, self -regulation, motivation, empathy, social-skill. Without EI, a person can be a good manager but not a good leader.

A manager creates a circle of influence while a leader creates a circle of power. Leaders lead people by inspiring and motivating them while managers manage work by heading a group of people to accomplish a goal. Organizations need both manager and leaders to succeed. Manager brings in organizational skills and leader brings in creativity and innovation to the table.
