Open letter to the junior students

Dear juniors,

You might be wondering that you are still too young to care about your future job and finally the life you would be leading. Hence you might decide to waste your time playing video games, watching TV and discover new ways to waste time. What fruits would these yield?

Wasting time in the junior years would eventually lead one to be a part of the vicious cycle.Once in it,there would be no way out.One would only find himself entangled in the loop as he/she grows older and approach higher studies.

Being the part of this vicious cycle myself,I can assure you that it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience when you reach my age.Once in higher classes, there would be very less time to build ones skills. The constant pressure of board exams would keep you engaged for the whole span of time.

Now you might have the questions — “What are the skills that need to be developed?” The answers are simple; writing, reading and speaking skills with active reading being the main contributor.

As you all know that passing the board exams by memorizing textbooks would get one to no-where.The studies you pursue in the college would ultimately decide your job and hence your adult life. For these to be ideal, one must get admitted to good colleges.Good colleges have aptitude tests during admissions which test your writing, speaking, reading and problem-solving skills.Reading actively, solving math problems diligently, writing reviews and summaries of books and movies that you have read and watched, etc. all act together to enhance the required skills.

However, all of these have a process to be maintained and followed. One requirement is the ability to stay focused. This also follows the same rule — practice. The ability be focused is also gained by practicing to stay focused during the junior classes. If one is focused when the basic topics are taught, the ability to understand the more complicated topics improves. Consequently, this makes one the part of a virtuous cycle where he/she does well in everything.

Expanding on the skill development — Firstly, read a lot. Whether articles or storybooks, READ! Reading improves writing skills as one gets a good taste of writing he/she has read a lot. This also enables you to judge and criticize your own writings and work towards it. Obviously, one must practice writing frequently.

But a writing isn’t anything more than a 4-year old’s essay if it doesn’t consist good and sophisticated words. Then how to learn these words? — Memorize them from the dictionary? — NO!!

One can increase his/her vocabulary by reading actively. Meticulously checking each new and difficult word you encounter while reading something is the key.

Another way is to ignore frivolous conversations. One can also learn good words and their usage by having deep conversations with friends who are good at these. Having deep conversations enhances one’s speaking skills as well. You learn to speak logically and clearly. A person with halting English would be regected during college or job interviews.

I hope that you would keep these in your mind and get more self-motivated. Though it’s completely up to you to decide the path you want to walk on; after all,we are independent!

—From a suffering and repenting senior student.
