Committed vs Excited.

Whether it is learning a new skill we are fascinated about, or going on a new journey, or starting a new relationship with someone we find cool, we often get the butterflies in our stomach, a spark in our flames, that occurs when we think of starting something we find really exciting.

We feel excited because it appears to give us a remedy to our uneventful loop we call a life, so when out of the blues, something new or interesting, is about to happen that promises to change the narrative, we get a juiced up feeling about it, our minds picture all the adventures we are going to have, and takes us from a 0 to a 100 real fast, and our heart beats a little faster in anticipation. What we often feel is so intense, we think nothing can ever go wrong. We will definitely see this through!

Even commercial adverts or sales people don’t use “exciting” in their scripts by mistake. The word triggers alot of emotion. Don’t believe me? Next time you hear the word exciting used during adverts, be more conscious of what it does to you. I could bet my 2 cents that it would grab your curiosity for more than 10 seconds. Unless you are the harbinger of sadness, who doesn’t want to hear about something that promises to be exciting ?

It’s no wonder that we often start this new thing, journey, relationship, whatever it is, with a lot of excitement. I once was so excited to start working out, eager to get that summer body and flat tummy, I would wake up by 7am, wear my running shoes and hit the streets. I had a targeted amount of pounds I needed to burn, it was hard, but it was day 1 and I had my body goals and you can bet I was excited about reaching it.

I could also say the same for when I first started out mobile app development, I was excited and determined about being an app developer, I was thrilled at the thought of building my first real application that would solve a problem. I got all the online tools I needed, the courses, even set out a time when I would be done with everything I needed to learn. At that point I was unstoppable. Infact if anyone told me that at the time of writing this, I would still not have my first app on play store. I would have laughed them in the face. I was that serious and excited about it.

But here’s the thing, on day 7 of jogging on the streets every morning by 7 am, it was getting harder, my body was in severe pains, walking was getting more difficult every morning, and I was no longer as excited as I was on day 1. Yeah flat tummy was nice but if this was the price I had to pay, I was considering staying how I was. Who are we fooling? It’s difficult to still be excited when things get harder. Infact the more it gets hard, the more excitement fades.

It took a bit longer for the excitement to fade with app development, but the same thing happened eventually, and yes, I still don’t have an app on the play store. Maybe one day.

The big realization in all my experiences with wanting to do something and failing to do them over the designated period of time I planned was that I started out with excitement that never lasts. And if your reason for doing something is just because you are excited about it, you have to bear in mind that your excitement will not last too. And I don’t mean to be a downer or scare you but what happens after excitement fades?

The mood being excitement here. I like to say that where excitement stops, commitment will begin.

It’s easy to do things when you want to do them. But commitment is even greater, it’s doing something when you have zero urge to do it, you just know you are supposed to do it and you do it.

When facing the choice of learning a new skill, the question should not be are you excited about what you want to do? It should be are you willing to be committed to what you do till you get it right?

So many people focus on excitement, and the moment it stops being exciting and becomes hard, we give up or think it’s not meant for us. Well, what if whatever you believed, you were right. What if its really your decision and you just needed to be a lot more committed to get it right?

If you haven’t lost interest and you are excited about something, but you aren’t willing to stick with it when it seems hard, you might as well not do it at all because you won’t always feel like doing it.

Commitment is what differentiates wishers from doers.

So if you want to lose weight, remember your arms will feel sore and you will feel like dropping dead at day 5 and it will be tough but will you be committed? If you want to learn a skill, remember that you will hate the fact that you can’t get things right on some days, and you will feel like you aren’t good enough and even call yourself an idiot, but will you be committed?. If you want to go into a relationship, remember it won’t always be rosy and your partner will make you sad and crazy on some days and you might feel like punching them in the face, but will you be committed?

Committed or Excited? Which would you rather be in the long run?
